Even though rabbits can be adorable little creatures…their holes may not be. The term “rabbit hole” originated from Lewis Carrol’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, symbolizing a surreal and disorienting experience of delving deeply into a complex and often confusing topic like politics. Political rabbit holes are the intricate, convoluted paths that individuals can find themselves traveling down when delving into those complexities. These rabbit holes can be enticing, drawing people in with promises of understanding and enlightenment, only to lead them deeper into a maze of information, opinions, and ideologies.
At the heart of many political rabbit holes is the vast expanse of information available in this digital age. The internet serves as a treasure trove of political content, ranging from news articles and scholarly papers to social media posts and online forums. With just a few clicks, individuals can access a seemingly endless array of perspectives on any given issue.
However, this abundance of information can be overwhelming, particularly for those who are new to political discourse. Without a solid foundation of knowledge or critical thinking skills, individuals may find themselves susceptible to misinformation, propaganda, and conspiracy theories. These rabbit holes can lead them down paths filled with falsehoods and distortions, ultimately shaping their beliefs and opinions in ways that may be harmful to themselves and society as a whole.
One common political rabbit hole is the echo chamber effect. In today’s digital landscape, it’s easier than ever for individuals to surround themselves with like-minded people and sources that reaffirm their existing beliefs. This can create a feedback loop where individuals become increasingly entrenched in their own viewpoints, dismissing alternative perspectives and demonizing those who hold them. As a result, they may become closed off to new ideas and resistant to constructive dialogue, further perpetuating division and polarization.
Navigating political rabbit holes requires vigilance, critical thinking, and a healthy dose of skepticism. It’s essential to approach political information with an open mind, seeking out diverse perspectives and verifying sources before forming opinions or sharing information. By staying informed and engaged, individuals can avoid getting lost in the maze of political rabbit holes and contribute to a more informed and democratic society. Actually, taxes can be great rabbit hole for politicians. Tax cuts are great right? Whoever is promoting a tax cut is our friend, right? Let’s take a look at the big tax picture. Question…do you think our tax system in our country is fair?
How about a positive non-partisan option that would benefit us all?
Facts: Last week it was announced Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest for the fourth year running, worth $177 billion, while Elon Musk rocketed into the number two spot with $151 billion, as Tesla and Amazon shares surged. Altogether these billionaires are worth $13.1 trillion, up from $8 trillion in 2020 and believe it or not, paying a smaller tax percentage than school teachers and firefighters. In addition, according to a recent Huffpost article, America’s largest companies dodged nearly $300 billion in taxes (i.e. AT&T, Bank of America, Citigroup, Duke Energy, FedEx, General Motors),.
Knowing the current tax code will soon expire, numerous millionaires who want to be fairly taxed (imagine that) formed a grass-roots organization called the Patriotic Millionaires or the Great Economy Project. The goal is to inspire working people…the most powerful voting group in America…to demand an economy that puts more money in their pockets and gives their family and their community a chance to thrive regardless of what political party is in charge.
Our community is blessed to have an opportunity to be directly involved in this effort/program here in Richland County titled Economic Equality Now. And what would an equitable tax on the rich mean: affordable childcare, paid family/medical leave, reliable internet, fully funded schools. Now there is a rabbit hole worth living in…or at least worth exploring in more detail.
Here’s how to get more information: The book “Tax The Rich” by Morris Pearl and Erica Payne gives a rare inside view of how the current system is rigged and a blueprint of how to fix it. Also, two internet sites to explore: https://patrioticmillionaires.org/, https://greateconomyproject.com/ or find Economic Equality Now on Facebook. In addition you are welcome to join us for our upcoming monthly meal/meeting at the Phoenix Center (April 4th, May 2nd or June 6th) at 5:30. Feel free to contact myself (719)213-9963 or Beverly Pestel (812)243-3584 for more info.
What a great opportunity to “hop” on board a positive effort to bring us together for a common goal of creating economic equality for us all
